Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami started making headlines early during Wednesday morning, but for all the wrong reasons, as his wife Hasin Jahan alleged that the pace bowler has been cheating on her with several women, revealing the WhatsApp and Facebook chats of her husband. Jahan also accused Shami of domestic violence and adultery in social media posts but the bowler has rebutted the claims, calling them “lies” in his Twitter post. Jahan has, however, still not sought a divorce from the 27-year-old so far and said that she will drag Shami to court.
Speaking to ANI, Shami said that the accusations against him are false and it is only an attempt to defame him. “All these accusations made against me are baseless. They have no meaning. She said that this has been happening since five years, the fact is that we have been married just for four years,” Shami said.
“If this (the abuse) has been happening since five years then why did it come out now’ Why did it take five years for it to come out’ According to me, this is a well thought out conspiracy against me. I want to remain just as normal as you’ve always seen me. On Holi and every other festival, I’ve been with my family. Spent time with my daughter and wife. Even after my wife was trolled so much in the past I stood by her. And I would like to stand by her today as well,” he added.
The 27-year-old further claimed that the mobile number that Jahan is talking about doesn’t even belong to him and he won’t accept something that he hasn’t done. “See, neither is that my mobile, nor is that my number, nor is that my chat. So I can never accept something I’ve never done. (READ | Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri aware of Mohammed Shami controversy but CoA decided to put contract on hold: BCCI)
“Everyone knows the relationship I’ve shared with my family, how happy I was. And it’s not as if I’m the only one who knows how my relationship with my wife is, even in South Africa she demanded to go shopping and I took her even though I was with the selectors at that time. Everything was fine. Even after returning we went shopping, we bought jewellery. We celebrated Holi. I don’t know what has happened suddenly. I’ll let you all know as soon as I find out.”
Shami termed the whole subject a conspiracy to spoil his name and game and also claimed that he tried reaching out to Jahan but she did not pick up his phone, however, his father in law spoke to him very nicely. “All allegations are baseless, it does not have any meaning. Cannot say anything about the case till the time I get to know everything. There is some conspiracy behind this, it may be a conspiracy to spoil my game.
“I tried to contact Hasin but she did not pick up my phone but will meet her soon. The way I am, will stay with her like that forever. I contacted my father in law, he spoke to me very nicely and I think the things will sort out soon,” he added.
In her conversation with TOI, Jahan claimed that Shami has been indulging in adultery for several months and has relations with women from Pakistan and Dubai as well.
“This has been going on for several months. I found this out on his way back from South Africa last month. He stayed at a hotel in Dubai while the rest of his teammates returned to India. A chat revealed that he was scheduled to meet a girl from Pakistan at the airport. He checked into a hotel on February 18 with the woman. He came back to India the next day,” Shami’s wife claimed.
“He regularly calls these women to his hotel rooms whenever he is visiting these cities. He also has relations with women in Pakistan and Dubai. I confronted him but he threatened me and dared me to do whatever I wanted,” Jahan added.
Shami has played 30 Tests for India, claiming 110 wickets so far. The bowler has also appeared in 50 ODIs and seven Twenty20 Internationals, picking up 91 and eight wickets respectively. Shami got married to Jahan in 2014 and has a daughter named Aaira Shami.
In the wake of the controversy, Shami’s name was also taken off from the newly released BCCI central contracts, with the board waiting for the cricketer to get a clean chit on the matter before putting him back in the list.
